Know Before You Go
Required – ATV Safety Card, ATV Permit, Flag (when on dunes).
Pre-ride Checklist, review the following:

Wear Proper Riding Gear – DOT Certified Helmet (required for all
operators and passengers under 18), Goggles, Gloves, Long sleeve shirt or jacket,
pants (no shorts or cutoffs), over the ankle boots. Wear appropriate clothing for
expected weather conditions, layer up if need be

Maintain Proper Rider Fit – Do not operate any vehicle that’s too
big to control. Only operate appropriately sized vehicles

One quad = One rider – Do not ride double unless the vehicle is
specially designed for two people

Do you have your ATV Safety Card? An ATV Safety Card is required for all
Class I (quad) and Class III (off-road motorcycle) operators. In addition, Class IV
(side x side) operators under age 16 are required to have an ATV Safety Card as well

Adult Supervision is required for youth operators under age 16

ATV Permit – required for vehicle when operating on land open to
public ATV use

Vehicle Knowledge – familiarize yourself with the location of all
controls and inspect the vehicle to make sure everything is in good working order
before riding

Proper Equipment – only operate a vehicle with an approved muffler and
spark arrestor

Flag is required when riding on the dunes

Riding Area Map – have a map, preferably georeferenced map of the area
you plan to ride

Ride with others and let others know where you are going

If you have a cell phone, store contact information in case of immediate need

Identify potential hazards of the area you plan to ride before riding

Pack essentials – such as water, snacks, first aid kit, tool kit and phone
When riding, familiarize yourself with the following:
- Know your limits and ride within your comfort zone
- Ride at safe speeds that are appropriate for the riding conditions
- Don’t override your sight distance
- Scan the riding area for hazards and use good judgement
- Be alert to your surroundings and other riders
- Pay attention to landmarks to use as reference points
- Keep sound down – do not exceed state sound limits
- Keep lights on to improve the visibility of others seeing you
- Avoid jumping – if you do, always have a spotter
